5 Black-Woman Owned Businesses With Products You Need To Try

Author: Tomi Simisola Sodimu

Supporting Black-Owned Businesses is one of the founding principles at Young Creatives Market. Entrepreneurs and creatives everywhere are creating incredible products and building fantastic brands worldwide and we are committed to amplifying their voices and celebrating their achievements. In 2014, I challenged myself to become a more conscious shopper and from that moment until now, I've patronized tons of black-owned businesses and am obsessed with so many of them! Since word of mouth is such a powerful tool (I mean, who doesn't love a solid recommendation?), here's my list of 5 black-woman owned businesses that make products that you need to try!

1. Honey Pot Company

The Honey Pot Company is a black-woman owned, natural, plant-based feminine care company. They sell pads, tampons, femme washes, and wipes that are all environmentally friendly, plant-based, and chemical, dye, fragrance, and pesticide free. I've been using their products for a year and a half now, and they have changed my life (you can read more about that here).

My personal favorites from this company are the Overnight Herbal Pads, and the Sensitive [Femme] Wash, and I quite literally, cannot imagine life without them.

2. Alodia Hair Care

My second pick is Alodia Hair Care. I first found out about this company at a pop-up shop in DC in 2018. I met the company's incredible founder Dr. Isfahan who gave me a quick consultation and recommended the products that have transformed my hair for the better. I now swear by these products.

My favorite products from Alodia are: the Nourish & Heal Organic Black Soap Wash, Nourish & Grow Healthy Hair and Scalp Oil, and the Nourish & Hydrate Deep Conditioning Masque. My hair flourishes whenever I consistently use these products. They have improved my tender-headedness (s/o to that black soap shampoo), my hair is better hydrated and moisturized (and retains that moisture), my curl pattern has improved, and I am retaining more length. I would 100% recommend trying any (but preferably all) of the products I mentioned, they have been just that good to me.

3. Simisola Naturals

My all-time favorite body moisturizer is the Simisola Naturals Unscented "Tomi" Body Butter. It is made with ingredients like shea butter, cocoa butter, avocado oil, and coconut oil, to name a few.

Even though it's unscented, the cocoa butter in it makes it smell like chocolate, which I love. It also layers well with vanilla & musk scents. The body butter is super hydrating, has great texture, leaves my skin feeling soft and smooth, and has helped with my stretch marks and dark marks.

4. Mohini Experience

I love a good bob, and Mohini makes my favorite ones - the cleo bob, and the cleo highlighted bob. In addition to making my favorite bobs, the company - which is owned by a young Nigerian woman - also makes ponytails, and has a great salon located in Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria.

I also buy all my lashes from Mohini Beauty. My favorite ones change depending on my mood, but I would say my 3 staples are the Tanny, Lexxy, and Selina lashes. Word on the street is that Mohini Beauty is launching a makeup line soon, so let's all stay tuned for that!

5. Natures Locks

Nature's Locks sells a lot of incredible things, but my favorite - and the favorite of my household - are their satin pillowcases, closely followed by their Reparative Hair Growth & Sealing Hair Oil.

Their pillowcases are so handy and come in cute bags, making them easy to travel with! Sleeping on satin is also amazing for your skin and hair - especially if you're one of those people whose scarf or hair bonnet slips off of their head at night. Their sealing hair oil is also great. I use it to pre-poo and to seal my twists.

I hope this was helpful and that it encourages you to try something from one (or all) of these brands! Do you have any other company or product recommendations? Let us know on Instagram!
